One Shot That’s Tough to be Consistent with is the FLOP SHOT

WHat is a flop shot

We’ve all seen it done on by professional men and women’s golfers on TV or an accomplished golfer or professional at your home course. It is for sure one of the best shots in golf to watch or perform, but it more than usual often leaves golfers looking like not so accomplished skulling it across the green or sometimes the proverbial swing and a wiff and your next shot nowhere near the green or in a hazard or right at your feet still. This shot is very tough to gauge distance when striking the ball.

The flop shot is an invaluable shot that every modern golfer needs to add to their arsenal. It is no doubt one of the most difficult shots to actually pull off.

Becoming proficient and consistent at it takes time and like all other things in golf, it takes work.

The flop Shot is a pitch shot with an open club face to achieve a high ball flight that lands softly without much roll on the green.

The flop is best used when trying to hit over an obstacle with not much green to work with. An example is over a greenside bunker where the pin flag lies super close to the edge of the bunker.

A pitching wedge degree is usually not the best club choice. For best results use your 60-degree wedge out (or 64-degree if you have one)

It is very important to have confidence in your stroke and DO NOT slow down through impact. Slowing down at impact will no doubt lead to chunking or blading your shot, we’ve all been there.

Another tip would be don’t flip your wrists upwards when impacting the ball. Ideally try to keep your wrists firm to make that contact clean.

Making clean contact is important of course if you desire spin on the ball which allows the ball to bite when landing green side.

Your short game is where you cut strokes on the golf course, so obviously time spent practicing and getting the feel of the shot and not over thinking it like most of us amateurs do with many shot is the struggle.

So get out there and practice this shot on the driving range. Once you have the technique down and feel confident, let it go, give it a shot on the course. Undoubtedly if your like me “the struggle is real” and consistency comes over time and putting the reps in on the range. Best if luck, don’t leave it for the pro’s or scratch golfers at your course get out there and let it go.
